Backyard Transformation: A Cohesive Desert Landscape
When the homeowners purchased this Scottsdale property, the backyard came as is—nearly wall-to-wall concrete pavers, dated tiered landscaping, and a layout that made the space feel disconnected and difficult to use. A former koi pond had been filled with dirt, leaving behind an awkward void rather than a focal point.
They even noted that the backyard’s condition may have been one of the reasons the home hadn’t sold previously.
The potential was clear—but the space needed vision, cohesion, and a thoughtful desert-specific approach.
That’s when they brought in Chad Norris of High Desert Designs, trusting him to reimagine the outdoor space from the ground up with Scottsdale’s climate, lifestyle, and architecture in mind.
A Scottsdale Backyard Remodel, Designed With Intention
Rather than surface-level updates, the goal was to create a fully integrated outdoor environment—one that felt natural to the home and functional for Scottsdale desert living.
The backyard transformation included:
A complete backyard remodel
Custom travertine installed wall-to-wall, creating seamless flow and a resort-style foundation
A fully rebuilt fireplace, sourcing stone that already matched the home’s architecture
A new fire pit, designed as a central gathering space for year-round use
A custom outdoor kitchen, ideal for entertaining in Scottsdale’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle
Curated pots and desert-appropriate plantings, selected for durability, texture, and heat tolerance
Every design decision focused on flow, scale, and usability—key elements in successful Scottsdale landscape design.
Extending the Vision to the Front of the Home
The success of the backyard redesign naturally led to the next phase.
Impressed by the results, the homeowners asked Chad to continue the transformation to the front of the property, including the front patio and front yard landscaping. The same travertine was carried through to ensure visual continuity from front to back—creating a cohesive arrival experience and elevating the entire property.
Why Cohesive Landscape Design Matters in Scottsdale
This project highlights the impact of thoughtful, climate-appropriate landscape design. In Scottsdale, outdoor spaces aren’t secondary—they’re essential. When designed holistically, they can redefine how a home feels, functions, and is perceived.
What began as an almost unusable backyard became a cohesive Scottsdale desert landscape, ultimately shaping the identity of the entire home.
